I often hear people say, “It’s so expensive to eat healthy”. My reply is always the same, “It can be if you don’t know where to shop”. In today’s blog I want to debunk the myth that fruit & vegetables are costly, and pass on some tips to help lighten the load on your purse next time you are shopping.
1. Don’t buy your fruit & vegetables from supermarkets: While Coles and Woolies often feature discounted fruit and vegetables in their catalogues, the reality is that there may be 3-4 items on sale – while the rest of the fruit and vegetables you need, you have to pay top dollar for. Start shopping at your local green grocer for all your fruit and vegetable requirements. Not only will the price, overall, be cheaper than the supermarket, but the fruit and vegetables you buy will be much fresher. This is because most of the produce is supplied directly from the wholesale markets daily and put straight on the shelves for sale. Coles & Woolies, on the other hand, bulk-buy their fruit and vegetables and store it in temperature-controlled rooms until it is distributed – this means that the broccoli you buy from a supermarket can be up to 6 months old…yuk!
2. Find a local farmers’ market in your area: This is even better than going to a green grocer! The popularity of markets has exploded in the past few years, and in particular, those selling fruit and vegetables ‘straight from the farm’. Google where your closest farmers market takes place (often weekly/ fortnightly) and pay a visit. You will be amazed at how much cheaper the produce is and feel good about directly supporting our ‘farmers’ (as often you will be buying straight from the grower!). Best of all, there is often a wide-range of organic fruit and vegetables to select from and this is great if you are looking to cut back on your ‘chemical load’.
3. Grow your own: There is nothing more satisfying than growing your own fruit and vegetables – and it’s a great way to get your kids interested in eating them too. If you are a total novice, try starting with easy to grow options: tomatoes, radishes, beans, salad leaves, beetroot & strawberries are perfect. Don’t forget your herbs – basil, mint and dill (in the warmer months) are fool-proof. If you live in an apartment, you can grow most of these in tubs.
