3 ‘Healthy’ Foods That Are Making You Fat

When you are busy, you often have to eat ‘on the run’ and, therefore, make quick decisions about what would be your healthiest choice.  However, quick decisions are not necessarily the best decisions – particularly if you are being influenced by the packaging and marketing buzz words (such as ‘low-fat’, ‘high protein’ etc).  This week I want to examine some ‘go to’ foods that you may be eating when you are on the run that may be doing you more harm than good.

Don’t be tricked by the ‘low-fat’ label

Low-Fat Yoghurt:  This one is my pet hate!  Any chef will tell you, fat equals flavour, so low-fat yoghurt manufacturers have to bump up the sugar content to keep things tasty (not to mention , salt, thickeners, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and other such added nasties that our bodies don’t process or eliminate well).  Often the full-fat alternative is much less processed and contains fewer calories with only a few grams difference in fat content.

Protein Bars:  These bars were originally made for body-builders to eat pre / post-workout to help with muscle growth.  However, the explosion in body consciousness has seen the average person eat these (who may not visit a gym at all), with an expectation that they are a better option than a chocolate bar.  Unfortunately, this is not the case. Most of these bars are packed full of calories and sugar (of course, there is protein too but the amount varies depending on the brand you buy), but if you are not working out then it can be almost like having another lunch in terms of the calories you are consuming!

Ready to Go Breakfast Drinks:  These are a disaster. While they may be promoted as being ‘low fat’ a thorough analysis shows that they are low in fibre, high in calories and very high in sugar.  CHOICE Magazine recently did a review on these breakfast drinks and found that most of them surveyed had over 20g sugar…which is 4 teaspoons!

The best solution to eating when you are busy is preparing food yourself (the night before or on weekends, so you are ready for a new week) and knowing what you are consuming. ..as the more you buy pre-packaged snacks / meals, the less you know about what you are actually eating.

The Natural Way do not use pre-packaged meals or shakes to get you to your goal weight.  All the food on our program is food you have to prepare yourself – however, our meals and snacks are simple, easy-to-prepare foods that won’t have you slaving in the kitchen for hours (our own Recipe Book is jammed full of 100’s of easy recipes that will have you losing weight and never being hungry).  If you want to find out more about our fabulous program, you can call us on 1300 SLIMMER (1300 754663) OR visit our website:  www.thenaturalway.com.au
