ALCOHOL and Your Weight Management Over The Festive Season

You’ve been working hard all year and Christmas is just around the corner…so naturally, you want to have some down time and enjoy some ‘Christmas cheer’.   Of course, it’s not just overindulging in yummy food that is the problem that you and your waistline face over the Festive Season:  overdoing it in the drinks department can definitely pile on the extra kilograms too.  This week, I will outline the ‘best option’ alcoholic drinks that you should choose in order to have the least effect on the scales.

The general rule of thumb is simple:  the higher the alcohol content of the drink, the more calories it will contain.  This is because one gram of alcohol contains 7 calories and these are ‘empty’ calories which have NO nutritional value.  For example, a full-strength stubby of beer contains 145 cals whereas the same sized stubby of light beer only contains 100 calories.  If wine is more your thing, there is a wide-variety of low-alcohol wines on the market which are excellent for those watching their weight e.g. Lindermans’ ‘Light Harvest’ range is 25% lower in alcohol than standard wines.  Alternatively, you can halve your caloric intake when drinking wine by pouring yourself only a half glass and topping up with soda water!  Half wine & soda is the perfect drop for Festive Season celebrations.

If spirits are more your thing, then there are certainly ways you can indulge without packing on the pounds.  First things first:  DO NOT DRINK PRE-MIXED CANS OF SPIRITS!  Most of them are full of sugar due to the soft drinks they are mixed with.  Did you know that one can of Bundaberg Rum & Coke contain 250 calories?  EEK, talk about a sugar overload!  However, if you prepared your own mix of Bundaberg Rum and Diet coke (with a standard nip of rum), the same drink would only be 65 calories.  Diet soft drinks and soda water are the best zero-calorie mixers and, even better, just go for a half nip of spirits when making your own to halve your alcohol / calorie intake.

Most importantly, you need to pace yourself when indulging in a few Christmas drinks.  The best way to do this is to have a glass of water between drinks.  This is a sure-fire way to ‘slow down’ your drinking rate and therefore, decrease your overall calorie intake.
