Alcohol and Your Weight

If you are trying to lose weight but feeling frustrated by your efforts, maybe it’s not what you are eating that is the problem.  If you are regularly drinking alcohol, then this can have a very negative effect on your ability to shed the excess kilograms.

Alcohol contains empty calories – the term ‘empty’ literally means that alcohol contains calories but these calories are nutritionally empty i.e. contains NO vitamins or minerals.

Besides the extra calories, alcohol is also a problem due to the way it is broken down in your body – it is metabolized differently than other foods and beverages. Under normal conditions, your body gets its energy from the calories in carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which are slowly digested and absorbed in your gastrointestinal system.  However, this digestive process changes when alcohol is present.

When you drink alcohol, it gets broken down first (because it is viewed by the body as a toxin) and digestion of ‘real’ food is delayed, so is much more likely to be stored as fat.  Not only that, it is your liver which responsible for breaking down alcohol and the extra energy required to do this slows down the function of this all important organ.  This impacts on your overall metabolism, making you more prone to gaining weight.
