As a weight loss consultant, I can confirm that the most commonly asked question I hear is, “How much weight can I expect to lose every week?” It’s almost easier to answer “How long is a piece of string?” because the answer can vary so greatly from person to person. Over the next two weeks, I want to explain all the reasons why giving you an exact answer to this question is just so difficult.
In the ideal world, it would be perfect that when you embarked on a weight loss program, you lost 1kg a week (or more). Unfortunately, this is just not a realistic expectation. Here are just two reasons why there are so many variables:
- The bigger you are, the bigger the loss: If 2 people both have a goal weight of 70kg but one has a start weight of 80kg and the other 140kg, the heavier person will definitely lose much more weight each week (particularly initially). This comes down to simple logistics – the more you have to lose, the greater the weekly weight loss. However, this is will change as you get closer to your goal weight and, no matter how much you have to lose, plateaus will occur so don’t expect consistent 1kg losses every week.
- Your age will make a difference: Have you noticed as you have got older, losing weight is even more difficult? Unfortunately, it’s a natural phenomenon that we can’t avoid! This means, in most cases, a 21 year old will lose weight at a much faster rate than a 61 year old. The problem is that as you age, your body loses muscle mass which slows down your metabolic rate (i.e. the rate at which you burn calories). However, there are ways to help your metabolism along: ensure that you exercise regularly as any activity will help to ‘speed up’ your metabolic rate. Also, make sure you incorporate some resistance training in your exercise program, to reduce the amount of muscle mass that is lost over time.
