This week, we are continuing with our blog series regarding how much weight you can expect to lose each week when you are on a diet – as you would have seen from last week, there are so many variables that can affect the rate at which you lose weight. This week, I am going to add to the confusion (ha ha) and examine reasons why your lifestyle might be having a negative impact on your rate of weight loss:
If you are frustrated that your weight is taking a long time to lose, then perhaps it’s your lifestyle that is causing the problem:
- Are you stressed? When you are stressed, cortisol & adrenaline, our stress-response hormones, are released into the blood-stream and this creates havoc. These hormones cause blood sugar fluctuations which means you literally ‘crave’ sugar in order to try and stabilize the roller coaster.
- Not getting enough sleep? Sleep is valuable as crucial biological functions occur (such as muscle repair, cell regeneration etc) while you are getting some shut-eye. So if you don’t get enough, your body will struggle to maintain its metabolic rate. You need at least 7 hours a night in order to get success on the scales.
- Are your family helping you stay on track? If you are making a lot of effort to watch what you eat, but the people around you aren’t, then your job is a whole lot harder (particularly if your will-power is not the strongest). If you are in charge of preparing meals at home, don’t buy junk food and cook healthier meals for everyone. Your whole family can benefit from your new healthier habits.
Just remember, we are all individuals and one size does not fit all. You can exercise and eat exactly like someone else and have entirely different results. While most experts would agree that 0.5-1kg a week is realistic, the truth of the matter is that slow and steady wins the race as you usually will keep the weight off much more successfully.
