Winter meals can taste even better if you choose the right ingredients: right now, there is a wide selection of fruits and vegetables that are in season. This week, I am going to discuss the benefits of eating produce that is ‘in-season’ and let you know what you should be buying right now.
There are numerous reasons why you should always by produce that is in abundance RIGHT NOW. The benefits of eating in season include:
- Taste is Better: The produce that is in season now is freshly picked at its prime time and is full of flavour and colour with its desired texture. So you will always buy fresh food that is at is most tasty!
- Cheaper: This is based on simple economic principles i.e. supply and demand. When there is more supply, the prices go down and the demand increases. Seasonal produce is much cheaper to produce and sell for the farmers – and this is reflected in the price you pay for it.
- Environmentally Friendly: Fruit and vegetables that are grown in season produce require much less human assistance such as pesticides to help them grow.
- Forces creativity: By eating in season it forces you to eat different fruits and vegetables and therefore create different meals and dishes that you may not always eat. It is a great way to add variety to your diet and by trying new recipes it can be fun to get the family involved in the process too. If you get stuck there are plenty of creative websites and blogs with great recipes and ideas through our The Natural Way Recipe Book.
