The Average Australian Woman

I know I am not telling you anything ‘new’ when I say that, as a nation, we are becoming more and more overweight.  In fact, according to the latest statistics, around 54% of Australian adults are now overweight.

If we analyse this further, the rise in the overweight adults has literally exploded in the last 20 years or so.  Did you know that in 1995, only 33% of adults were overweight?  Also, in 1995, the average woman weighed around 67kg, but latest statistics put the average Australian woman at just over 70kg.

A previously published article in the national Sunday newspapers, showing a photo of the ‘average’ Australian woman today, and asked the readers ‘do you think she is overweight?’  Did not  see the article – if not, take a look below and see what you think of Melanie W:  incidentally, Melanie is 163cm tall and weighs 70kg:

Melanie’s BMI is just on 26 (which puts her in the overweight category) however, it is interesting to note the public debate that erupted as a result of this photo being published in news forums – of course, opinion was split as to whether Melanie was in fact ‘overweight’ or not.

The fact of the matter is that (in my opinion) Melanie is carrying just a little extra around the waist and hips and those extra kilograms can have a detrimental effect on her health in the long run.  Did you know that if you are just a little overweight, the risk of heart disease is lowered with every kilogram that you lose?  Losing just 5kg can actually lower your risk of heart disease by up to as 25%.

It’s not just risk of heart disease that can be lowered by weight loss:  the incidence of developing diabetes is also lowered and damage to joints by arthritis.  It is estimated that if you are overweight and lose just 5kg, that there is between 13-30kg less pressure on the knee joint with every step that you take!  Of course, the nearer you are to your ‘ideal’ weight, the less likely it is that osteoarthritis will develop in the first place.
