As mentioned, the article I read outlined the results of a study, conducted by the CSIRO which survey 90,000 Australian adults and analysed why many people find it difficult to maintain a healthy diet and lose weight (to read the complete article, click here).
These were said to be the top five diet personality types: The Thinker, The Craver, The Foodie, The Socialiser and The Freewheeler. They are characterized as:

- The Thinker (37%): overthinking and worrying about failure leads to stress which can derail diet progress
- The Craver (26%): craves food and finds it hard to resist temptation
- The Socialiser (17%): food and alcohol has a large role in their social life
- The Foodie (16%): passion for making, eating and experiencing food
- The Freewheeler (4%): makes spontaneous and impulsive food choices, finds planning meals hard
I can certainly agree that ‘The Thinker’ is the most common ‘diet’ personality type – often when people make a decision to lose weight, they have an expectation about HOW MUCH weight they will lose over a given time frame. This is often unrealistic and as soon as they don’t lose weight as quickly as they thought, they simply decide to give up.
